Audiology brings together medical knowledge and sophisticated technology equipment to improve the quality of life of people with hearing-related problems.
Audiology:This is the medical specialty responsible for the studying of hearing in the different stages of life. Not only does it encompass the hearing diagnosis, but also research, prevention, screening, education, and rehabilitation of the aural function. In Mexico, it is required to complete medical school and fulfill a four-year residency in order to practice as an audiologist. Furthermore, it is mandatory to hold a degree, professional license, and the acknowledgment bestowed by the Consejo Mexicano de Comunicación, Audiología, Otoneurología y Foniatría A.C.(Mexican Council of Communication, Audiology, Otoneurology, and Phoniatrics).
Hearing tests: There is a broad battery of hearing tests. The results of these guide the medical specialist to determine the existence of hearing loss: type, degree, and cause of loss. After conducting the medical interview and the physical exploration, your audiologist will choose the best option for you.
Your health in the hands of professionals:The audiologist will ascertain whether you are considered a candidate for medical treatment or surgical treatment; whether you are required to undergo more tests to confirm a diagnosis; whether you should adopt certain measures to effectively improve your communication skills, or whether you are deemed a candidate for aural rehabilitation using hearing aids.
Consequences of hearing loss: Hearing loss in children limits the acquisition of speech sounds and constricts the development of school skills, such as reading, writing, and arithmetic. Children with hearing loss are likely to get hold of fewer opportunities for development in school, social, and work environments. Conversely, the communication difficulties experienced by adults with hearing loss are cause for insecurity, isolation, interpersonal conflict, and, moreover, depression and cognitive deterioration.
